One of my favorite spots around Savannah is the newly renovated Cohen’s Retreat! The building used to be a home for retired gents, then an Olympic training facility. Now, the doors have been reopened for a full restaurant, event space and retail shop.

Next up in our signature style series is Rachel Shingleton from Pencil Shavings Studio. Rachel is on a mission to “Banish the Beige” but installing pops of color into everything around her. We’ve fallen in love with her devotion to the bold. Here’s what Rachel has to say about her signature style.

PencilShavings7

EMc: Why do these photos show your signature style? What aspects really tell us who you are?
RS: My style is probably best describe my style as dressy casual. I want my things to get a lot of love and wear. So I might buy a pair of sequinned flats, but I’m going to wear them with everything from a cocktail dress to a pair of jeans and a tshirt. I don’t believe in saving things only for special occasions. I’m madly in love with color, pattern, and the way they interact with white (which is my neutral of choice) and I’m really interested in mixing and matching high and low items, both in interiors and in fashion.

EMc: How do you carry your signature style into all aspects of your life be it home decor, entertaining, or fashion?
RS: Color is a huge element of my signature style. In fashion, I like a pop of yellow (ha – could you tell from the inspiration pics?) be it in jewelry, a great bag, or shoes. And at home I’m having a major white moment – white paint is super inspiring to me right now, again, with pops of color through pillows, artwork, etc.

My goal at home is to create comfortable places for my kids to grow up in without sacrificing our own grown up sense of style. I think our interiors reflect that, along with a good dose of not taking ourselves too seriously. I want something that’s not too formal, but with a big dose of personality. I buy nice shoes, but I wear them hard. And likewise, I want to use my fine china for every day use because life’s too short not to use our nice things, you know? I’ve yet to do this often, if I’m being honest – but it drives me nuts to see it sitting in the cabinet without be loved daily.

EMc: What is your personal definition of “signature style”?
RS: Personal style to me is what makes me feel best at home with myself, be it through the clothes I wear or the things I surround myself with. It’s my own personality expressed visually.

EMc: Give us three words to describe you. Why did you choose these three words?
RS: Colorful, happy, fun: I’m naturally cheerful, and I get a lot of joy out of color, connecting with others, and doing fun things. I hope my kids remember me as this one day.

EMc: What are three of your most prized pieces that you think fully represent your signature style? This could be a piece of furniture, jewelry, art, etc.
RS: 1) Blue Prada handbag (a fab structured bag but in a great color that adds a little polish to basic outfits) 2) Green velvet tuxedo sofa that was from my Dad’s office. It’s currently needing a reupholstery job but I have big plans for it one day. The style is spot-on and transcends all trends. I adore that sofa. 3) My Suzy Landa delicate stacking diamond rings that my husband gave to me for our 10th anniversary. They’re so pretty and unusual, and the meaning behind them is everything to me. He’s a pretty amazing guy, my husband!
EMc: What is your best tip to encourage others to find and develop their own signature style?
RS: What do you gravitate to over and over again? There’s a reason you keep going back to it. Also look to things from your past with meaning associated to it. It’s hard for me to only pick three prized pieces; our home is filled with little things from my childhood or from my beloved grandmother’s home that were passed down to me. All these little layers and elements add up to signature style. At the end of the day, signature style is me feeling like my best self. So what is it about you that helps you feel your best?

A signature look is all in the details. We can’t get enough of the simplicity and elegance while sticking to a classic color scheme with a pop of sass. Leopard is our favorite neutral around here while black and gold are the perfect palette to build a look from home decor to fancy footwear.

Cheers!

Savannah, Georgia is such a destination spot for vacationers and I am often asked to share my favorite local hotspots. When J. McLaughlin asked me to sport a few of my favorite items from their collection, I thought Savannah would be the perfect backdrop for a family tour! First stop? One of my go-to lunch spots, Kayak Kafe.

Since we are gluten-free (husband has celiac and I have a moderate intolerance), we stick to a very limited list of restaurants that provide GF menu choices. Kayak Kafe offers many options for their signature tacos, paninis and salads. Delish! I love their focus on fresh ingredients and a “California” style. They have two locations, Downtown on Broughton Street and Midtown on Paulsen Street.

For lunch with a girlfriend, I decided to go with the Tania Top and Pippa Pants – super comfy and stretch for a fulfilling meal and chasing little ones!

Categories: entertaining, weekly style tips

As we continue on with our signature style series, there are two creative minds behind the interior design house of Parker Kennedy. Lance Jackson and David Eckton embody modern and quirky, something we can really get behind. Their work has been featured in multiple publications, and now they’re sharing their signature style secrets with us (questions answered by Lance).

EMc: Why do these photos show your signature style? What aspects really tell us who you are?

PK: We design traditional interiors with a fresh approach by adding colors and textures to take it to a new current level. Color, bamboo and Chinoiserie are usually big aspects of our design work.

EMc: How do you carry your signature style into all aspects of your life be it home decor, entertaining, or fashion?

PK: When we design we always have some pop of color with a nood to chinoiserie or bamboo. When we entertain we always have our dining table set with vintage and new patterns mixed using color and chinoiseries with touch of some form bamboo on the table.

EMc: What is your personal definition of “signature style”?

PK: My personal definition of personal style is having a trade mark look that carries over into all aspects or your design and life.  For us it is when someone walks into an interior we have designed and they know its a Parker Kennedy Living room.

EMc: Give us three words to describe you. Why did you choose these three words?

PK: Classic, Color and Confidence  – I selected those three words because we are always looking at interiors making them a fresh classic with color and we have the confidence to do it.

EMc: What are three of your most prized pieces that you think fully represent your signature style? This could be a piece of furniture, jewelry, art, etc.

PK: 1) My white vintage chinoiserie fretwork dining table with  a mirrored inset top.  2) My vintage gold bamboo flatware. 3) My master bedroom Thibaut Drapes and custom pagoda cornice boards.

EMc: What is your best tip to encourage others to find and develop their own signature style?

PK: Search deep on what makes you happy and saturate yourself with it in all visual aspects of your life.

Thank you, Lance and David, for giving us a glimpse into your styled life! To keep up with Parker Kennedy, find them on social media.

Halloween Style

Being festive isn’t just a pleasure, it’s a necessity around here. This year, there’s no question that you’ll be the most stylish witch on the block. When planning a bash of any kind, choose our Personalized Fill-In Invitation from the shoppe to set the tone. For libations, we think there is no better pair than our Spot Cheetah cocktail napkins in “Luxe Onyx” mixed with the Cheers version in orange for an All Hallow’s Eve Soiree.

Here at the Emily McCarthy studio we are hopelessly devoted to beautifully curated signature style. It became apparent to us that we had to share the secrets behind some of our favorite bloggers’ own classic style. To kick off our series we got to speak with Paige Minear of The Pink Clutch. We asked Paige to share some photos with us that really helped define her unique sense of style. Here’s what Paige had to say.

EMc: Why do these photos reflect your signature style? Which aspects really give us an idea of who you are?

PM: Clearly I love color and pattern and I am not afraid to use either in both my home and my clothes.  I love to be surrounded by those I love and think every outing is an adventure.  I love to travel, make memories and linger over coffee and wine.  If it has bright colors, tons of pattern and is tied with a bow, I probably made it or bought it!

EMc: How do you carry your signature style into all aspects of your life be it home decor, entertaining, or fashion?

PM: I am originally from Florida where both bold colors and bamboo were a way of life.  I grew up in a sea of pink, turquoise and all shades of green that worked every month of the year.  I am drawn to any and all things Palm Beach, even my husband who is from Palm Beach County!  My fondest memories are of my childhood sleeping in my grandmother’s pink guest room and surrounded by palm trees, citrus fruits and bright happy colors.  These are the things that bring me so much joy on a daily basis.  I truly feel like color is just a part of my soul.  Our home is full of color, with a pink dining room, a turquoise office and pink and white Meg Braff bamboo wallpaper in the bar area.   If I am feeling under the weather I pile on more color and pattern, it just lifts my spirit!  I am a girl who thinks even her iced tea is better with a slice of orange and a pink striped straw!

EMc: What is your personal definition of “signature style”?

PM: For me the definition of “signature style” is anything you are drawn to over and over again. I love that I can spot a photo on Instagram or Pinterest and know who it is before even glancing at the name.

EMc: Give us three words to describe you. Why did you choose these three words?

PM: Fun, Loyal and Colorful.  These words describe who I strive to be every single day.  My goal is to go to bed each night with no regrets and to have a full and happy heart!  We aren’t guaranteed anything on this earth and we should live each day to the fullest.  Loving others is my most favorite thing to do!

PinkClutch2

EMc: What are three of your most prized pieces that you think fully represent your signature style? This could be a piece of furniture, jewelry, art, etc.

PM: Three prized possessions – (1) Our yellow, pink and green vintage French china cabinet in the dining room.  I paid $200 for this piece on New Years Day years ago and it won my heart at first sight!  It took me two trips to get it home in pieces after buying it and I was so excited to load it with our china and inherited silver!  (2) My antique clock in the den.  My grandparents and parents have the same clock and the sound of its chimes bring me immense peace. (3) The gallery wall up our front stairs and down the hall on the second floor.  It is filled with photos of our babies, our lives and our families.  It makes me happy each and every time I see it.

EMc:What is your best tip to encourage others to find and develop their own signature style?

PM: By what you like and make it work.  Don’t apologize for what you like and wear it with pride!  Your signature style will show itself in the things you are drawn to over and over again.  My husband is Alex P. Keaton made over Palm Beach style.  He will buy navy, khaki and gray for work and fun shorts and boxers time and time again.  It is who he is and has been the same for the last 22 years!

Pssst, things are feeling rather celebratory around here! (You know how much we just adore a good party.) The talented Kimberly Whitman has published an ode to the monogram showing their ever present status in the modern home. Monograms are the new language of chic, and they offer countless ways to brand your life. We were thrilled that we got to lend our own style to the pages.

Celebrating the grand entrance of monograms into today’s requirements for a curated domain, Monograms for the Home dusts off the idea of the family insignia being a relic and shows it shining bright as a reclaimed staple. Purchase a copy for your own monogrammed home by clicking here.
